MPA: 11 Rescued, 2 Missing From Sunken Vessel In S'pore Maritime Area

SINGAPORE, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- Three passing merchant vessels rescued 11 people from a vessel which had sunk in the South China Sea within the Singapore Maritime Search and Rescue Region, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

In a statement here, it said it was informed of the rescue about 3.50pm on Friday.

"According to the survivors, there were 13 crew on board the sunken vessel. Two people are still unaccounted for," it added.

MPA said it had been providing navigational broadcasts to vessels in the vicinity to report any sighting of persons overboard and navigate with caution in the vicinity of the incident.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force had also deployed one Super Puma helicopter and one Fokker-50 maritime patrol aircraft to support the search and rescue operation, it said, noting that it was coordinating the ongoing search and rescue operation with Malaysian and Indonesian authorities.....
