FIRST DRIVE: Honda City & Jazz Sport Hybrid i-DCD

The year 2017 was supposed to be moderately-paced for Honda Malaysia after announcing plans to introduce no more than four cars, but the company went on to launch three surprise models – the Jazz Sport Hybrid, City Sport Hybrid and FK8 Civic Type R.

However, one can argue that the hybrid pair, which is presently the country’s most affordable hybrid offerings (RM85k for the Jazz, RM89k for the City), pretty much stole the show. The City Hybrid even earned itself two well-deserved spots in our latest Top Five edition, and for justifiably good reasons.

Here’s a quick refresher. Powering the Jazz and City Sport Hybrid i-DCD is a new 1.5 litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine that is mated to an electric motor. Together, they produce a combined system output of 137 PS and 170 Nm of torque, numbers which tread close to what the Honda Civic 1.8 makes.

Unlike the older Jazz IMA, the i-DCD hybrid system permits driving in full EV mode, and comes with an electrically driven air-con compressor as well. Honda claims the Jazz Hybrid sips just 3.9 litres of petrol per 100 km, while the City Hybrid is a touch more at 4.0 litres per 100 km.
